Its interesting to see how easy it is to get media attention these days. With so many news and entertainment channels clamouring for content, its become possible for any kind of news to be aired or printed. Be it the winner or the runners-up of the show ‘Indian Idol’, or contestants of a beauty pagent in Ludhiana, or a boy falling in the hole due to negligence of authorities…. everyone with a pinch of news / sensation value gets their share of ‘fame’. Its like the saying ‘theres time and space for everyone’, coming true.
In this 24X7 world of news channels you dont have to do a satyagrah to get T.V. footage; you just have to drive your car to the Prime Minister’s residence and rest will be taken care by the media. Its a different matter that television channels go overborad by taking a story and clinging on to it till the viewer has learnt it by-heart!
On second thoughts, the viewers get to see what they want to see. so why should anybody be bothered.

I wish everybody was happy and healthy.
I wish all my loved ones were hale and hearty.
I wish no bad things happened to any of my dear ones.
I wish people were not stubborn
I wish people were reasonable and understanding.
I wish……… (and the list continues)

I am soon going to use this blog as a resource ‘centre’ for my work related stuff. what all it will contain; the links etc… i am figuring out.

Exactly eight years back from today, I began my work in the development sector. Landing into this sector, right after finishing management course was quite disorienting. It was like suddenly changing your stream from mathematics to psychology. But young minds adapt- and i was no exception. Sometimes even managing your job very well can be management. So I can say my management studies didnt go waste, because of it I could apply myself in this sector. Anyways, looking back i think my contribution is still mathematically insignificant still a long way to go!

I got addicted to the world wide web and the mobile phone almost at the same time… I think sometime in 1998. That was the time when i thought chatting, e-mailing and surfing the net, having a mobile phone …. were the coolest thing to do (apart from working in a high profile office:)) . my fling with chatting lasted for about two months!!!; e-mailing became routine thing and surfing need based after six months; the cell phone became a utility item in six months. Maybe, i grew up from a college pass out to a serious professional.
Somewhere between 1999 and now my awareness of the comp or mobile tech. stagnated. My computer usage is limited to word and powerpoint (still it is the same) so other features never grew up on me. I hear the mobiles have evolved to do the exact same work a computer can do and vice-versa. But if i have to make a choice between using the comp and cell-phone interchangeably versus using them in the same manner as i used them four years back……. what will i choose??? Well, I think i still want to keep the two devices separate. To my mind, a parallel can be drawn (loosely) between the comp-mobile tech and the movies: earlier the movies had a heroine (to do the melodrama bit, sing soulful songs and be virtuous and righteous kinds) and a vamp (to do item numbers, wear ‘western’ clothes do the scheming with the goons etc….) but in the movies these days the heroine and vamp is rolled into one (gross injustice to both the roles).  I would rather prefer a separate computer and a separate mobile phone than everything rolled into one!

Recently while surfing the web, I came across an event that was held in Delhi by the name of BarCamp! Interested by the name, I tried to get more information through a google search. What I understood was that its a conference which is done in an ‘unconference’ manner (generally by tech geeks); where people are informed on the web; they can choose to sign-in for presentations and participation; be as unpretentious as they can be; come-meet-greet-retreat. The USP is ‘being democratic’ – an unconference of the people; for the people by the people. Got to know that similar BarCamps were orgnaized in other parts of the world that too with much success. Its all about lowering the Bar and letting the new players enter the tech field. For a person like myself, who is used to the idea of conference as being a formal meeting with strict agenda et al, this was a nice piece of information.
Further more what surprised me was that this technology ‘do’ was held for the FIRST time not only in India but in Asia and that too in DELHI!!!!!!!!!! (……. and I thought India’s tech scence is based in Bangalore!!!) and was attended by almost 75+ well meaning people/start-ups/cos.
One important thing that i noted was that this concept was brought-in and fructified by some guys at a tech-start-up named “Uzanto”, in Delhi. Now similar events are being organized in Chennai, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. I think its true that innovations and risks are taken by not so big and new companies. Kudos to this spirit!!!!
P.S: The second barcamp is being held in Chennai; the amusing part is Bangalore is getting its act together for grabbing the fourth place (Pune & Hyderabad have settled for third)!
